Can there be a ‘White Rose movement’ in Islam?

9 06 2007

That is a very important question. Can a person or group of Muslims become bold enough to speak out against the militant fringe of their religion?

A quick history lesson is in order. Via Wikipedia.

White Rose was a non-violent resistance group in Nazi Germany, consisting of five students from the University of Munich and their philosophy professor. The group became known for an anonymous leaflet campaign, lasting from June 1942 until February 1943, which called for active opposition to Adolf Hitler’s regime.

They appealed to the humanity in each person. Told them that the crimes they were letting their leaders carry out, while they did nothing would be on their own heads.
They ended their leaflets with the following.

We will not be silent. We are your bad conscience. The White Rose will not leave you in peace!

My question is can it happen in Islam?

I can’t do it as I am a Christian. I am looking at this from the outside. This needs to be done by a Muslim. They were Germans appealing to Germans. This needs to be done by a Muslim. It may not end well for you but the millions that you will save will remember your name.

We are told that Islam is a religion of peace. Can any of you stand up for what you want your life to be? Are any of you willing to tell a radical to shut up, that you want peace?
